North Spirit member does Health Placement in KO's Thunder Bay office

(07 11 29) Shelia Meekis, a North Spirit member who is currently studying Medical Office Administration, will be completing a two-week placement in the mental health pilot project of the KO Health programme.  She will be working out of KO’s Thunder Bay office but working under the direction of Jackie Rundle, the coordinator of the KO mental health programme in Sioux Lookout.

“I’m very pleased the way everything has turned out,” said Shelia Meekis.  “I will be able to work for my communities and apply what I have learned in school at the community level.”

This opportunity comes at a good time for the KO mental health programme, said Jackie Rundle.  “Its important to maintain up-to-date files on case loads but demand for counseling is so high it is difficult to do,” she said.  “After talking with Shelia (on video conference), I have a good feeling that she has both the community knowledge and the academic skills to help us out,” she said.

“Shelia has commitments in Thunder Bay which will keep her here for the time being but she has the opportunity to apply her new medical administration skills to the community needs because of the technology,” said Brian Walmark, Director of Research at the KO Research Institute.

The North Spirit member will travel to Sioux Lookout for three days of training before the annual Christmas shut-down and will complete her placement in the New Year.  To see photos, click here.
