(07 11 05) KO’s Brian Walmark presented a paper on work of Keewaytinook Okimakanak in promoting IP video conferencing at the community level in remote and isolated First Nations communities in Ontario’s far north.  It was part of the research conducted by the VideoCom team that includes Susan O’Donnell (NRC) Sonja Perley, Fenwick Mckelvey (Ryerson), as well as First Nations SchoolNet including Kevin Burton and his team at the Atlantic Help Desk (Andrew Sark) and Brian Beaton and his team at K-net Services.  It was a gathering of Community Informatics Prospects for Communities and Action (CIRN) at the Monash University campus in Prato, Italy.

Walmark provided the participants with specific examples of how community members are using IP video conferencing to address education and health access with such applications as the breast cancer awareness IP workshops and on-line professional development for CTCs and educators.

Walmark will be facilitating a discussion forum on community informatics.

The presentation was supported by the National Research Council (NRC) and Keewaytinook Okimalanak.
