(08 08 15) KORI hosts KO Board of Education Meeting

Education Directors from across KO as well as other community leaders gathered in the KORI offices in Thunder Bay to plan the next steps for the proposed board of education. Geordi Kakepetum, Goyce Kakegamic and Ross Mamakeesic participated in the discussions as KO is assuming more responsibility of the education of its youth.  KORI summer student Leona Rae spoke of her experiences as a KiHS student and how KiHS provided her with a solid foundation to pursue her educational goals first as a Con College graduate and now as a student at Lakehead University.  To see photos, click here.

08 08 12 Koocheching Trip

I got the chance to hop on the charter to visit Keewaywin and Koocheching for the day... to bad we couldn't stay longer. After checking in on the Dryden Telecom workers and the cellular tower (when are they going to turn that thing on?), we headed off to Koocheching in a beaver float plane. We were met by Jane who lives in the community on the beautiful sandy lake. The community runs on generator power and has a series of cables strung up for internet, along with wireless fed by KA band. the new KWW hop should improve the service and should be up soon. We had a great day checking on the equipment in homes and wiring up the cable shack. The solar powered well was such a gift!

8/8/8 Stories of our Elders

Back in the day I worked with a team of web developers, we built a masterpiece website called Stories of Our Elders, that was 6 years ago, technology has grown slightly, computers are not talking to us, but we can share stories through video and web.  With the new KORI media player, we are looking to gather more stories on research, cultural values, beliefs, traditional systems.
