Working at Keewaytinook Okimakanak

 The Keewaytinook Okimakanak Research Institute (KORI ) was created by
the KO Chiefs to build research capacity at the community level and to
seek out academics who are willing to put First Nations research
priorities over those of the institutions. KORI has facilitated research
projects between First Nations and university-based researcher on a
variety of topics in education, health, telehealth, lands and resources,
and economic development. All of KORI projects include Community-Based
Researchers who live, work and raise their families in their First
Nations. Community-Based Researchers are the core of KORI's activities.
The work of the KORI focuses on supporting the Chiefs and their priorities.

• KORI helps to document and shares the KO story with First Nations and academic organizations around the world
• KORI finds information for the leadership to help them make informed decisions
• KORI works with community members to build research and project management skills at the local level

KORI includes team members in support of First Nation-directed research. The positions require a secondary education and passion for learning and serving the communities.

Community Research Mentor - support community researchers   with training, and resources for local priorities. Visit and engage   communities and find new projects and funding for local initiatives.
Project Manager - Coordinate research projects including   budgeting, contract workers, reporting and liaising with funders.
Research Intern - manage individual projects and coordinate video   conference events and training.
•Student Placements - learn technical skills and contribute to   community research projects.
Research Director - Guide research practices, privacy and   accountability, liaise with community leadership, funders and   academic partners.

Keewaytinook Okimakanak has offices in Balmertown, Dryden, Sioux Lookout and Thunder Bay in various departments. Many staff also work in their home communities.
